Great White Sturgeon of the Columbia River - (Portland, Cascade Locks, Astoria)

Large Oregon Sturgeon Fishing GuidesMay through September is the time for Portland sturgeon fishing, and the Columbia River is the place if you want to catch a freshwater fish from 100 to over 600 pounds. This may sound to good to be true, but catching from one to ten, 100 pound plus sturgeon per day is almost guaranteed. These big sturgeon are hard fighting and many will jump repeatedly once hooked. Most will take from 30 mininets to well over an hour to bring to the boat. All Columbia River sturgeon over 60 inches must be released, so bring your camera or no one will believe you!

October through April are the best months to catch lots of sturgeon -- 20 to 40 sturgeon a day are common for the boat. Most of these fish will be between 30 to 60 inches long and will weigh from 5 to over 60 pounds. This is the best time to catch a legal keeper size sturgeon (38"to 54" inches), which are excellent to eat. If you want an action packed day of portland sturgeon fishing catching fish -- "lots of fish" -- this is it.

A significant economic and cultural resource throughout the Northwest, white sturgeon recently became a popular target fishery with major commercial landings in the Columbia River. In fact, Columbia River sturgeon production, with its valuable roe for caviar, is second only to the former Soviet Union's production.

The Columbia River is also the site of an intense sport fishery, as is the San Joaquin Delta in California and the Willapa Bay in Washington where guided fishing trips are popular. The white sturgeon is also an important fish for Native American fishermen on the Columbia and Klamath rivers. Trip information  Apply for an Oregon Fishing License online.
