Great White Sturgeon of the Columbia River
- (Portland, Cascade Locks, Astoria)

The
Columbia River near
Portland, Oregon is famous
for its large population of white sturgeon. They range in size from 20
inches to over 12 feet long. Sturgeon are almost always hungry, and you are
almost guaranteed that you will catch fish.
May through September is the time, and the
Columbia River is the place
if you want to catch a freshwater fish from 100 to over 600 pounds. This
may sound to good to be true, but catching one to ten, 100 pound plus
sturgeon a day is almost guaranteed. These big sturgeon are hard fighting
and many will jump repeatedly once hooked. Most will take from one-half an
hour to well over an hour to bring to the boat. All Columbia River sturgeon over 60 inches
must be released, so bring your camera or no one will believe you!
October through April are the best months to catch lots of
sturgeon -- 20 to 40 sturgeon a day are common for the boat. Most of
these fish will be between 30 to 60 inches long and will weigh from 5 to
over 60 pounds. This is the best time to catch a legal keeper size sturgeon
(42 to 60 inches), which are excellent to eat. If you want an action packed day of catching
fish -- "lots of fish" -- this is it.
The Columbia River winds its way
west along the borders of Oregon and Washington as it makes its way to the
Pacific Ocean (map above). Some of the best areas to catch sturgeon are
below Bonneville Dam at Cascade Locks, within view of the beautiful
Multnomah Falls and Horse Tail Falls. We also provide guided trips for
sturgeon at the mouth of the Willamette River in Portland and the mouth of
the Columbia River near Astoria Oregon (click interactive map above to zoom
in on these areas).

White Sturgeon
Sturgeon are always on tap for Catch & Release on the Lower Columbia
River. But Oregon sets seasons for retention of these special
prehistoric game fish. Common Names: Pacific sturgeon, Oregon
sturgeon, Columbia sturgeon, and Sacramento sturgeon. Sometimes
misspelled as sturgon.
White sturgeon are the
largest freshwater fish in North America and can weigh over 1,500
pounds, be 20 feet in length, and live for over 100 years. Anadromous
white sturgeon most commonly move into large rivers in early spring,
and spawn May through June.
White sturgeon are tough
fighters -- so make sure you are ready to do battle. Many days we will
catch and release over 25 fish. If your lucky enough to be here on a
retention date you will quickly become a coinsure of the best eating
fish there is. If you like Halibut its a sure thing you'll love
Sturgeon.
A significant economic and
cultural resource throughout the Northwest, white sturgeon recently
became a popular target fishery with major commercial landings in the
Columbia River. In fact, Columbia River sturgeon production, with its
valuable roe for caviar, is second only to the former Soviet Union's
production.
The Columbia River is also
the site of an intense sport fishery, as is the San Joaquin Delta in
California and the Willapa Bay in Washington where guided fishing
trips are popular. The white sturgeon is also an important fish for
Native American fishermen on the Columbia and Klamath rivers. Trip
